Steamboat boys basketball wears out Roaring Fork

— The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team erupted for a 22-point third quarter to pull away from Roaring Fork on Friday night, but coach Luke DeWolfe said it was his team’s defense that set the tone in the 48-33 win.

The Sailors used 10 players and, with an aggressive defense, ran the Rams ragged.

“More than anything, they just got tired down the stretch,” DeWolfe said. “We trapped and pressed the whole game. Our kids worked hard. We played 10 kids, and to have that kind of depth, it’s a really positive thing going forward.”

Carter Kounovsky was the only Steamboat player to make it into double digits scoring. He finished with 17, setting the pace on both ends of the floor.

“He had a great defensive game,” DeWolfe said. “He set a nice tempo for us.”

Steamboat led, 4-2, after the first quarter and by just one, 14-13, after the second. It outscored Roaring Fork by 17 points in the third, however, and finished off the victory in the fourth.

Now the squad, 2-0, is set to play Basalt on Saturday, also in Roaring Fork.

“Basalt always gives us a good game,” DeWolfe said. “They’ll come out and show us multiple defensive looks. We really want to keep our defensive intensity going and try to put together a full game on the other side of the court.”
