Steamboat board to discuss facilities

— Discussion of a potential $30 million bond issue to build or renovate the community’s elementary schools will continue at Monday’s Steamboat Springs School Board study session.

Discussion of the Harris Interactive survey results and the Colorado Student Assessment Program test results also are on the agenda.

The study session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with an executive session, and public comments will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the George P. Sauer Human Services Center on Seventh Street.

Superintendent Donna Howell said the facilities discussion will center on answering lingering questions about facilities and talking about the financial impacts of the bonds.

“We haven’t made a decision yet,” Howell said regarding the future of an estimated $30 million bond to rebuild Soda Creek Elementary School and renovate Strawberry Park Elementary School. “They need to give me an idea of direction, because we will have to start working on ballot language, because they would have to send the language in to be on the ballot by Sept. 8.”

The board won’t take action on a ballot initiative Monday, but the members will be able to ask questions and further discuss the future of both schools.

Howell said she is paying attention to the push by community members to have a community recreation center-related bond issue on this year’s ballot.

Before leaving for a conference a week ago, Howell spoke with members of the Steamboat Springs City Council.

“I think we will watch it,” she said.

The HarrisInteractive survey results is the first item to be discussed Monday. A representative from the firm will be at the meeting to go over the results and the meaning with board members.

HarrisInteractive surveys are implemented across the country to assess the climate, or atmosphere, within school districts.

“It’s satisfaction with the school district,” Howell said. “What’s the level of satisfaction of students, parents and staff members on a variety of different items? We take that info and look at it and set goals to improve satisfaction climate.”

The final item to be discussed Monday is CSAP results. This year, the district tested above, and, in some cases well above, the state average in reading, writing, math and science proficiency.

Students in grades 3 through 10 were given the CSAPs. Only fifth, eighth and 10th graders were given the science test.
