Steamboat baseball falls in doubleheader

Joel Reichenberger

The Steamboat Springs High School baseball team ran into one of the region’s best Saturday, and quite simply, the Sailors were overpowered.

Steamboat lost both ends of a doubleheader playing Saturday against Palisade, falling 10-1 and then 18-8.

“Those were two important games, and we just didn’t get it done,” Steamboat coach Dave Roy said.

The Sailors managed plenty of good play, but it wasn’t nearly consistent enough to pick up a win in either game.

Matt Regan took the mound first. He helped his own cause by scoring after leading off with a double but couldn’t keep Palisade off the scoreboard. The Bulldogs scored three in the first, then another two in the third.

“Matt threw a descent game, but those guys are really well coached, and they do hit the ball,” Roy said. “They’re just a solid lineup. We hit the ball well but couldn’t ever get it into the gap.

Pitcher Ryan Jeep struggled in the second game, at least on the mound. Steamboat trailed by six after the first inning. Jeep knocked in five of his team’s eight runs, and Koby Bishop came on with effective relief innings. Still, Palisade simply was too much for Steamboat.

The losses were big blows to Steamboat’s playoff hopes, though the Sailors still aren’t eliminated. Roy said things must improve before a Saturday doubleheader against Glenwood Springs, however.

“We’re not shutout from the playoffs yet. We’re hanging in there,” he said. “The tough part of our schedule is pretty much over.”
