Steamboat Art Museum’s new exhibit, “The New West: The Rise of Contemporary Indigenous and Western Art,” will open Dec. 2 and chronicle the beginnings of this sub-genre in the 1960s, as well as highlight the artists who continue to move it forward today.

The exhibit has been guest curated by Seth Hopkins, executive director of the Booth Western Art Museum, and features fresh takes on Indigenous and Western subjects, created by a diverse cross-section of artists. The museum acquired pieces from various private collections, museums and individual artists throughout the Southwest, presenting the work of over 25 artists in total. Some pieces are for sale by living artists.

There will be an opening reception from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 2. The exhibit will run through April 15.
