Talent show to be held in high school

— Ten local students will try to impress the judges at the Kiwanis Club of Steamboat Spring’s Stars of Tomorrow talent show tonight.

“This year, it looks like it will primarily be vocal and piano entries,” said talent show chairwoman Sheila Wright. “In the past, we’ve had everything from gymnasts to unicycle riders to actors, and we are hoping to beef it up again for next year.”

Wright is excited to see this year’s contestants light up the Steamboat Spring High School auditorium with their enthusiasm.

“We do this to help build self-confidence and give the youth a venue in the community to express themselves in creative ways,” Wright said. “And it looks good on student’s applications and resumes when applying to school or going into a music career.”

The Kiwanis Club has been in Routt County for more than 50 years, and the Steamboat club focuses on supporting the youths and senior citizens in the area.

“We’ve been doing the talent show at least since the ’70s,” said Kiwanis Club member Bud Romberg. “It’s an international competition, and the local contest winner will go on to a regional contest.”

The students will be judged by Courtney Gill, Jill Leary and Lucy Middleton on their interpretation, talent, general effect and appearance. The 10 entries represent the public and private elementary, middle and high schools in the county.

“It’s fun to see the kids up on stage every year and see how they improve and mature throughout the years,” Wright said.
