The Steamboat Team to Disrupt Antisemitism and Discrimination is hosting a community convening called “Just a Symbol,” fostering discussion among students, teachers, school leaders and parents about hate symbols and hate speech, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steamboat Springs Middle School.

“In September 2023, our community witnessed five swastikas graffitied, drawn and even burned into
public spaces,” states a news release from STAND. “Two years later, STAND and its partners have mobilized to learn from these incidents, engage in education and support the work of disrupting discriminatory behavior.”

Guest speakers at the event will include 20th Judicial District Attorney Michael Dougherty, Senior Associate Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League Jeremy Shaver, Rabbi Kolby Morris-Dahary and local high school and middle school students.

The event will provide a forum for learning, dialogue and action to better understand how hate symbols operate and impact individuals and communities.
