Zirkel uses 'green' energy to provide Internet service

— Zirkel Wireless is offering high-speed Internet access to Stagecoach residents.

Alan Belvo, president and co-owner of the Steamboat Springs-based Zirkel, said he and co-owner Sean Haskett successfully installed a “green” antenna site on the northeast shore of Stagecoach Reservoir up Blacktail Mountain that will allow Stagecoach residents to access high-speed Internet.

“With this new site, we’re able to pretty much get the entire (Stagecoach) community,” Belvo said. “If you have a line of sight to the antenna, or the reservoir, we can probably get you.”

Bringing high-speed Internet to South Routt County and Stagecoach has been a goal of Zirkel’s since the company started in 2001.

“We put a site in Oak Creek. Now we have Stagecoach and in the near future we’re looking to put in a site in Yampa,” he said.

The Stagecoach antenna site is powered with solar and wind energy, Belvo said.

Belvo said the antenna site has been engineered to run about eight days if it is not supplied by solar or wind energy.

“If the sun stops shining or the wind stops blowing, we’ll still be up for another 200 hours,” he said.

Haskett said the green site was so successful that the company plans to install Yampa’s antenna using green energy.

The company hopes to have Yampa’s antenna site up by early August.

Zirkel Wireless also hopes to bring its service to North Routt and Hayden.
