Stacey Bodden: Proud of community

On Sunday, Jan. 16, I was witness to an event in our community that I think was an inspiration to all who participated and attests to the giving nature of Steamboat residents.

Many members of our community, as well as local businesses, donated time and services to Karen Connell’s tsunami fund-raising efforts. The fund-raiser was held at Steamboat Gymnastics with Dan Atkins donating time and the location. It turned out to be a great success that served about 150 children and raised $2,150 for UNICEF.

The giving that this event inspired from adults and their children was remarkable. As I worked the sign-in and donations table, I was fortunate to hear how thankful people were that a local effort was being made to help the victims of the tsunami. The children who emptied their piggy banks to help the disaster relief efforts especially touched me. As Mac Skov so eloquently said as he collected his money for donation, “I am giving this money to help the children of the salami.”

I am hopeful that such fund raising does not stop as this disaster that fades from the spotlight. There are so many causes and needs around the world that deserve these same acts of kindness. I am proud to be a member of this community, as I saw last weekend that we can do little things to reach far and wide and help those around the world.

As an endnote, I want to thank those businesses and individuals who donated food, service and time.
