Steamboat Winter Sports Club skiers top podiums at SYNC cup in Winter Park

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club is competing in the SYNC Cup, a U16 Championships qualifier in slalom for the Rocky Mountain Division Series this weekend at Winter Park.

Top-placing athletes will earn spots in the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Rocky/Central U16 Championships in Winter Park on March 4 to 10.

Last year, there were 28 SSWSC athletes who qualified. The qualifying team will be named on Sunday.

SSWSC kicked off the competition Thursday, Feb. 14, in 10 inches of heavy wet snow, but SSWSC finished with three top placings on the day.

SSWSC skier Riley Grosdidier finished first in the giant slalom with a combined time of 2 minutes, 14.09 seconds. Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s Zoie Palmer came in second with a time of 2:14.09, and SSWSC’s Marissa Drobeck finished third with a time of 2:14.50.

On the boys side, Nick Kirwood of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail finished first with a combined time of 2:09.07. SSWSC skier Jordan Simon finished with a time of 2:10.28 to take second place, and Vail’s Toby Scarpella finished third with a time of 2:11.77.
