SSWSC skiers shine in Aspen
It didn’t seem to matter whether it was a sprint or a classic race; the members of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s cross-country ski team found the podium last weekend during a pair of races at the Spring Gulch Nordic Center in Carbondale.
“It was a good weekend for our skiers,” coach Brian Tate said.
On Friday, Paul Rose won the J-1 boys sprint race. Marty Smith was third, Mike Gleason was fourth, and Andy Garber was seventh.
Carter Miller was first for the J-3, and Jake Lyons was 16th. Evan Weinman was second in the J-5 boys class. Kyle Steitz was 10th in the J-2 boys.
Steamboat’s Sarah MacCarthy won the J-1 girls class. Melissa Krause was eighth in the J-2 girls class, and Mary Rose was ninth. In the J-3 class, Emily Stout was third, Molly Newman was fourth, Cameron Osteen was fifth, Katherine Ingals was seventh, and Liza Stout was eighth. Michela Frias was third in the girls J-4 class. Teammate Lucy Newman was fifth, Haley Piske was seventh, Mallory Richey was ninth, and Eva Lambek was 11th. Dori McNeil was first for the J-5 girls in Friday’s race.
On Saturday, the Steamboat team returned to the Aspen track and collected more top finishes.
Smith was third in the J-1 boys class. Rose was 12th, Gleason was 13th, and Andy Garber was 23rd. Kyle Steitz was ninth in the J-2 boys class. Miller was third, and Lyons was 16th in the J-3 class. Wienman placed second in the J-5 boys class.
Steamboat’s Korie Steitz, who skis independently, topped the J-1 girls class. Winter Sports Club racer MacCarthy was third.
Mary Rose led Steamboat in the J-2 class with a fourth-place finish. Krause followed her in fifth, and Lichtenfels was 16th. Molly Newman was sixth in the
J-3 girls class, Katherine Ingals was seventh, Emily Stout was seventh, and Osteen was 15th. Liza Stout was 17th, and Sierra Lorenz was 21st.
Frias was second in the J-4 girls, Lucy Newman was ninth, Piske was 11th, Lambek was 13th and Richey was 17th.
McNeil placed first in the J-5 girls class just in front of teammate Olivia Rose, who was second. Kate Cooper was fourth, and Sara Stout was fifth.
The Winter Sports Club team will head to Soldier Hollow this weekend for a super-JO qualifier. The athletes are scheduled to race Saturday and Sunday.
