Former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club skier Bode Flanigan made Boston College history, becoming the first Eagle ever to podium at the NCAA Ski Championships.
Flanigan, a 22-year-old Alpine skier, was one of six SSWSC alumni to compete in this year’s championships, including Nicholas Unkovskoy, Middlebury (Alpine); Hannah Soria, Colby College (Alpine); Isabelle Washburn, Dartmouth College (Alpine); Chase High, St. Scholastica (Nordic); and Grey Barbier, Montana State (Nordic).
The Ski Championships were hosted by Dartmouth College and ran Wednesday, March 5, through Saturday at Oak Hill Outdoor Center and Dartmouth Skiway in New Hampshire.
Flanigan’s bronze-medal performance in the slalom race began with a 43.05-second opening run to place him at 16th. His 45.07-second time in run No. 2 was third-fastest in the field of 34 racers, good enough to land Flanigan a third-place finish in men’s slalom with a combined time of 1:28.12.
“I really could not be more grateful for my teammates and coaches,” Flanigan said in a news release. “I wholeheartedly mean it when I say that I would not be here without any of them and without all of the BC skiers who have come before me. I’m honored to represent Boston College on the national stage, and I’m so excited for what’s to come for this team.”
The NCAA Ski Championships wrapped up Saturday evening with the University of Utah winning a fifth team title in six championship events. The University of Colorado broke University of Utah’s title streak last season.
