Speech team fares well at tournament

— The Steamboat Springs High School speech team finished its first round of competitions Saturday as 14 of its members traveled to the Cherry Creek Invitational Tournament.

Steamboat students competed in seven events in a tournament that had 31 schools, many from the Denver and Cheyenne areas.

Andrea Erickson received top honors for Steamboat, winning third place out of 36 competitors in the humor category. Receiving a perfect score in the second round of the tournament, Erickson had her best finish Saturday since the team’s first competition at the Moffat County tournament.

Also gathering kudos in the humor competition were Ben MacCarthy, who took home a superior ribbon, and Kelly Larson, who was awarded an excellent ribbon.

In foreign extemporaneous speaking, Justin Krause and Joey Andrew received superior ribbons, and Loren Cogswell received an excellent ribbon in drama.

“It was not our strongest tournament, but several students did improve upon their scores from pervious tournaments and we feel positive about the next two-thirds of our season,” speech team coach Shauna Lamansky said.

After a midwinter break, the speech team will return to competition in January, when it will have six tournaments in six weeks. The speech team will kick off the second part of the season with a home invitational tournament Jan. 12. Volunteer judges are needed for the event.
