Speech team fares well at meet

Sailors bring home ribbons from weekend tournament

— Jenni Stanford took the Steamboat Springs High School Speech Team’s top honor at the Overland Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

Out of 35 competitors, Stanford placed second in foreign extemporaneous speaking. She had perfect scores in the preliminary competition in a 21-team tournament.

Julie Lewis also placed well at the tournament, taking seventh place in national extemporaneous speaking but narrowly missing the final round of competition.

Other Sailor debaters had a strong showing, taking home superior ribbons, which is awarded to the second tier of competitors after the top six, and excellent ribbons, which are given to the third tier of competitors.

In foreign extemporaneous speaking, Justin Krause was awarded a superior ribbon and Joey Andrew and Lewis had excellent ribbons. And in national extemporaneous speaking, Andrew received a superior ribbon and Krause an excellent ribbon.

With a 2-1 record for the day, Julia Patterson earned a superior ribbon in the Lincoln Douglas Debate.

All three competitors in the original oratory received ribbons as Ben MacCarthy took a superior ribbon and Loren Cogswell and Kelsey Patterson took excellent ribbons. Cogswell also received an excellent ribbon in drama.

The five competitors in the humor competition were all awarded ribbons. Andrea Erickson, Ludwig and Kelly Larson took home superior ribbons and Ian Noyer and MacCarthy received excellent ribbons.

The Sailors’ next competition will be Saturday when they travel to Cherry Creek High School.
