Speakers fare well at tourney

— Three members of Steamboat Springs High School’s speech team members placed in a tournament last weekend.

The Denver East and Cherry Creek Invitational Tournament featured more than 35 schools.

Jenni Stanford took the highest place among the 10 speech members, who combined to compete in seven different events with students from Colorado and Wyoming. In foreign extemporaneous speaking, Stanford placed third out of 30 competitors.

Beth Ludwig had the second highest Steamboat finish as she captured fourth in the humor interpretation category. Andrea Erickson also placed in that category, taking 10th place out of 48 competitors.

Although Lincoln-Douglas debater Julia Patterson did not qualify for the quarterfinals in a field of 49 competitors, she did finish with a winning record of 3-2.

The speech team will have a two-week hiatus with several of its members participating in “The Wizard of Oz” musical performed at the high school this weekend. The next tournament will be

Dec. 1 at Overland High School.
