Sound Off for Jan. 22

Get perspective

Let’s get some perspective. When employees retire or quit, it is up to the employer to decide when. Cut out the grandstanding and move on.

Address parking issues

Rather than spend time on bus schedules, how about paying attention to the parking problem? For years, city councils have allowed downtown business developers to pay a fee rather than providing parking spaces. What has been done with that money? Where is the additional parking downtown?

Don’t allow attacks

I like Sound Off, but I have a suggestion: Don’t allow entries that are personal attacks on individuals. Unsubstantiated slander can hurt people. Don’t allow it to be printed in a supposedly respectable newspaper. One of the entries last week was disturbingly malicious and sounded like someone lashing out at a personal enemy. If you want to trash someone in public, have the guts to sign your name.

Shame on Pilot

First of all, shame on Scott Hoffner for ending such a poignant article (Jan. 15, Letter to the Editor) with such a chauvinistic remark. Shame on the Pilot for picking this line as a headline. When is our society going to stop insulting women and girls? How do you describe a “girly man” anyway, especially to a girl? It is a blatant put-down to all women and girls in this community, including Dorothy Wither.

If the editor that approved that headline is a female, shame on you, and I hope you are embarrassed. If the editor is a male, then you owe all females in this town an apology, especially your own wife and daughters. Scott, why don’t you be a “real pioneer man” and apologize, as well?

Bible class bad

I think the Bible class is an absolutely ridiculous idea. I think it’s a thinly veiled attempt by a religious group to put religion in the public schools. I can see doing a comparative religion class, but to put in a yearlong Bible as literature class is ridiculous.

Drivers beware

As a longtime resident of the area, I am perplexed. I cannot recall the number of close calls and near misses I have experienced this season at intersections throughout the area. Drivers just pull out and take the right of way. Some may attribute this to the mega piles of snow, which is much needed and appreciated and we have been blessed with this year. After a few leaner winters, did people forget how to drive safely and proceed with caution through the intersection? Or maybe some of these close calls can be attributed to the numerous drivers preoccupied with cell phones in one hand and coffee in the other? Please, put down the cell phone and other distractions.
