Soroco’s Kelley named 2A’s top trackster

Soroco's Ben Kelley won each of his three events last month at the Class 2A state track meet. That feat earned him the Colorado athlete of the year honors for 2A.

Soroco’s Ben Kelley made a pretty solid case for himself last month at the Class 2A state track and field championships in Lakewood.

Kelley won all three events he entered — the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, and that made him an easy choice for Class 2A athlete of the year, announced Friday by the Colorado High School Activities Association and presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.

Kelley’s accomplishments stood out. He was the only Class 2A athlete, boy or girl, to win three individual events. Shane Finegan, a Wiggins senior, won four times, twice in individual events, the 200 and 400, and twice again in the 400 and 1,600 relays.

On the girls side, Soleil Gaylord, from Telluride and Sophia Anderson, from Paonia, each won two individual events and both were also on first-place relay teams. Each also finished second in another individual event.

Kelley was also named to the 2A all-state track team, along with Soroco sophomore Grant Redmond, who won the high jump.

Gaylord and Anderson split the girls 2A track athlete of the year award.

Hayden freshman Hannah Wilkie, who won the 800 and denied Gaylord a sweep of all of her events, made the girls all-state team.
