Soroco to play host to wrestling weekend

— Routt County wrestling fans will get a great chance to see their local athletes in action twice this weekend.

The Soroco and Hayden high school teams will particpate in a triangular with Saratoga (Wyoming) High School starting at 6 p.m. Friday in Oak Creek.

One day later, those three schools will be joined by about half a dozen more for a tournament at Soroco High School.

“It won’t be a huge tournament, but we’ll have plenty of wrestling and it will be a fun day,” Soroco coach Jay Whaley said.

Saturday’s action also will include Buena Vista, Gilpin County, West Grand, Battle Mountain and Lake County high schools.

The Rams are hoping for strong performances from their small squad.

Soroco has just three athletes on the team this year. Whaley said the team, especially 106-pound junior Shad Covlat, managed a strong start to the season last weekend at a Middle Park High School tournament.

Covalt wrestled to second place in his 15-man bracket.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” Whaley said.

Lane Martindale, a 132-pound sophomore, and Dalton Ray, a 138-pound freshman, round out the lineup for the weekend’s hosts.

Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. Saturday. Finals should start between 1 and 2 p.m. and everything should be wrapped up by 4 p.m.

The Steamboat Springs High School squad will compete this weekend at a tournament in Delta.
