Soroco takes down Hayden in Meeker
Steamboat Springs — The Soroco High School boys basketball team bounced back in a big way Friday, which was unfortunate for Hayden.
The Rams took first blood in the intra-county basketball rivalry this season, beating the Tigers on Friday at the Meeker Cowboy Shootout, 59-25.
“It was a great recovery,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said about his team, which lost 89-49 the night before to Fruita Monument’s junior varsity. “We got a lot better continuity in our offense and we were able to spread the floor. We were much more focused on offense and defense.”
The Rams got 22 points from Warren Hayes and 11 from Chance Beaty.
Hayden was led by Carlos Valdez, who scored 15.
“The kids play hard every night and that’s what I ask them to do,” Hayden coach Jody Harvey said. “It’s not about X’s and O’s with these guys right now, but it’s about gaining a basketball sense, understanding how to play the game better.
“Soroco played well and shot the ball well and we didn’t shoot the ball well.”
The result bumps the Rams to 2-2 on the season and drops Hayden to 0-5.
Both teams play again Saturday in the tournament, Soroco against Moffat County’s junior varsity and Hayden against Caprock Academy.
