Teen struck by car Friday night on Colo. 131

— A Soroco High School student was listed in critical condition at a Denver hospital Saturday after being struck by a car Friday night on Colorado Highway 131.

The unidentified 17-year-old McCoy male was hit by an unknown vehicle in Oak Creek about 11:30 p.m. Friday night, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Rick Kaspar said. Investigators think the teen, who was highly intoxicated, was lying in the northbound lane of Colo. 131 just south of the entrance to the high school and probably had passed out, Kaspar said.

The boy sustained serious head trauma and was listed in critical condition Saturday morning at Denver Health Medical Center, Kaspar said.

Yampa resident Steve Padilla, 19, witnessed the accident and told investigators at the scene that he thought the vehicle may have been a white pickup, Kaspar said. The pair apparently had left a party in the 400 block of Grant Avenue in Oak Creek and were headed home when the accident occurred.

“Right now, we do not have a suspect vehicle,” Kaspar said. “We’re not sure that whoever hit this gentleman knows they hit anything.”

The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Kaspar said Saturday it was undetermined how fast the unknown vehicle was traveling or whether it had slowed or tried to avoid the boy in the road.

“There was definitely significant issues with sight and distance due to curves in the road and because it was dark at the time,” he said.

An ambulance crew from the Oak Creek Fire Protection District transported the teen to Yampa Valley Medical Center. He was airlifted to Denver Health early Saturday morning. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene but did not immediately return calls for comment Saturday.
