Soroco girls tripped up by Meeker

— Soroco coach David Bruner said his team didn’t shoot well in a Friday night win against Rangely.

On Saturday, that aspect of the Rams’ game got worse, and that was one key component of the team’s 52-37 loss against Meeker in the championship of the Meeker Cowboy Shootout tournament.

“We had great effort throughout the game, but our execution was not good,” Bruner said. “I bet we shot 20 percent from the floor. That may even be generous. We just didn’t shoot it well, no one on our team.”

Soroco got 13 points from Briana Peterson and 8 each from Hayley Johnson and DaKota Bruner.

Soroco hung with Meeker throughout much of the game, but a dusty and dry fourth quarter sank the squad. The Rams were held without a basket until the final minute of the period, and then they scored only four points.

It wasn’t enough to keep up with a charging Meeker team, which got 25 points from Sydney Hughes.

“Meeker’s a good ball team,” David Bruner said. “We’ll give them credit. They outplayed us today, but we’ll learn from it.”

Soroco, 2-1, travels Tuesday to play at Denver North.
