Soroco girls defend to win

Soroco High School Rams

— The shooting wasn’t pretty, but Soroco High School girls basketball coach David Bruner said the defense was, and that helped pave the way to a 65-45 win Thursday for the Rams against the Mesa Ridge junior varsity team in the opening round of the Meeker Cowboy Shootout tournament.

“I was pleased with our defense, and our shooting will come around,” Bruner said. “We played really good full-court pressure defense.”

Soroco, 1-0, returns to the court at 6 p.m. Friday to play against Cedaredge, a tough early-season contest for the Rams.

The Bruins beat Soroco by nine points in the district tournament a year ago en route to qualifying for the Class 2A state tournament.

Cedaredge has since moved up a level to Class 3A, so the team won’t be a factor in the district this season but still offer a daunting early test for the Rams.

“It should be a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to it,” Bruner said.
