Soroco girls blast Rangely

— The Soroco High School girls basketball team was well ahead of Rangely at halftime, and then it played even better in the second half, pulling away to set up an exciting showdown Saturday for the Rams.

Soroco beat Rangely, 68-41, at the Meeker Cowboy Shootout, setting the stage for the Rams, 2-0, to play the host, Meeker, on Saturday.

“We definitely played well pretty much the whole game,” coach David Bruner said. “We played pretty well on defense, but we still have some work to do.”

He said the squad was a bit lethargic in the first half, though it still took a 26-11 lead into the half. It was even better in the second, especially after Bruner gave up on a short defensive experiment he was trying out. Soroco scored 42 points in the final two quarters.

In the game, Briana Peterson scored 19 to lead the team. DaKota Bruner had 13, Jessica Rossi had 10 and Kali Constine had 10.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” Bruner said. “I told the girls, ‘Just imagine if we have a good shooting night. There’s no telling how many points we can score.’”

They will be looking for as many as possible Saturday against Meeker, a squad that beat the Rams four times last year, including in a season-ending regional tournament championship loss.
