Soroco girls basketball team struggles in two recent games

— Third quarters are beginning to become a problem for the Soroco High School girls basketball team. The Rams gave up big points in the period Friday night in a loss to Hayden, then again Saturday against Paonia.

The 58-38 loss left the team, which cruised into Friday’s showdown against Hayden, looking for answers.

“They’re disappointed they lost both games, that’s for sure,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “Still, they’re pretty up-beat. They know they need to play a full game, and if they do, they can play with anyone in the state.”

The Rams trailed Paonia, the defending state champs, by 6 points at halftime, but scored just 4 points in the third quarter.

Paonia used that time to break the game open and build the big lead.

Soroco, 6-4 on the season, went just 7-30 from the field in the final two quarters.

Corey Snyder led the team with 14 points, and Ceanna Rossi grabbed six rebounds.

“Now we have three home games in a row. The girls are saying, ‘Let’s win those when we go play at Hayden, we’ll be 9-4,’” he said. “These girls are solid, strong and work hard, and they’ll be ready to get after it this week.”
