Soroco girls basketball blows out West Grand, advances to districts

Ben Ingersoll

— Out of the four Routt County 2A hoops teams vying to keep their seasons alive, only the Soroco girls squad made it out of Tuesday’s pigtail games with a shot to advance deeper into the playoffs.

Soroco made easy work of West Grand, beating the Mustangs, 80-55.

It was Soroco’s 15th win on the season, a feat no Rams girls team has accomplished since 1998, and just the fourth time in school history a girls squad has done so.

The Rams were led by DaKota Bruner’s 19 points and a strong performance on the boards by Jacey Schlegel and Jessica Rossi.

“As a team, we definitely stepped it up,” Bruner said. “We worked together. It was a total team effort on defense.”

The Rams advance to Friday’s district tournament, which will be held on the Soroco High School campus for the first time in nearly a decade. The Rams have a 3 p.m. date with No. 1 seed Meeker.

The winner of that Soroco-Meeker game will play for the district championship at 2 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the No. 2 Paonia and No. 3 Hotchkiss matchup.

Soroco dropped both of its regular-season matchups with Meeker, 56-38 in December and 60-31 on Jan. 31.

“They’re ranked sixth in the state,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “They have eight seniors who have been playing together for a long time.”
