Soroco football loses to Dayspring Christian, 67-14

— The Soroco High School football team’s run through the 8-man football playoffs will have to wait a season.

The team lost Saturday in Greeley in a cross-conference game, its first postseason appearance since dropping to 8-man, against one of the state’s most consistent powers, Dayspring Christian Academy, 67-14.

“It just shows the kids where they need to go and how much work we need to do,” Rams coach David Bruner said.

The Rams hung in the game early, and at first, matched Dayspring Christian’s powerful offense.

Sophomore quarterback Nic Paxton, in his first game back after a thumb injury, threw for two long touchdown passes in the first quarter, both to Pie Lombardi.

The score was 14-14 headed in the second.

Turnovers slowed the Rams’ tide, however, and helped Dayspring Christian create the gap that only continued to grow.

The Eagles ran the ball effectively all day behind a massive offensive line.

At the same time, they found ways to pressure Paxton and cover his receivers.

“They were a lot bigger than us up front. They averaged about 60 more pounds than we did, and that really showed,” Bruner said.

“They were able to make long drives and get 6 or 7 or 8 yards every carry and eventually score. Then they changed their defense, and that made it harder for us to throw.”

Dayspring Christian has made the championship game each of the past three years, winning it twice.

Soroco ends their season, 6-3 overall, 3-2 in Western Slope League play.
