Soroco football hopes to stop big Cowboys today

— The Soroco High School football also hopes to capitalize on last week’s game. The Rams, though, will be pushing to keep their record perfect.

The team rose from a 20-point third-quarter deficit to knock off South Park, and it now hopes to turn the offensive confidence gained late in that game into a 3-0 record.

The Rams will play host to 0-2 Plateau Valley at 7 p.m. today.

“We moved the ball last week in the first quarter, but we couldn’t push it in,” Soroco coach David Bruner said. “Then, the way we played in the end helped us get a little more confidence. Now, we need to use that to put together a couple drives early in the game and get some points.”

That might be possible against the Cowboys, who struggled through their first two games of the season. They lost their opener, 32-14, to Vail Christian, then followed that up with a 42-0 rout last week against North Park.

The key to a Soroco win, however, might not come on offense. Instead, it will be in stopping a hard-nosed Plateau Valley rushing attack, led by fullback Dalton Schuman.

“We’re not nearly as big as they are, but we might have a little more team speed, so we’ll have to get the job done that way,” Bruner said. “That fullback is a load and we definitely have our work cut out for us.”
