Soroco boys hoops no match for hot-shooting Fruita Monument JV

— Soroco High School boys basketball struggled quite a bit Thursday night to kick off the Meeker Shootout, falling by 40 points to Class 5A Fruita Monument’s junior varsity squad.

A promising first quarter was followed by 24 rough minutes as Fruita Monument cruised past the Rams for an 89-49 victory.

“We started off pretty well,” Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said. “We stayed pretty even with them for the first quarter, then we got into a little foul trouble and just lost our intensity on defense. They shot the ball very well the entire game.”

The loss drops the Rams to 1-2 on the season.

Eric Logan led the reams with 12 points. Carl Rossi pitched in 11 more, and Warren Hayes scored eight, but there wasn’t much the Rams could do to keep up with the hot-shooting Wildcats. Soroco also had only 10 free-throw attempts in the loss.

“We stopped shooting as much and didn’t penetrate,” Hayes said. “They went on a big run shooting, and we just couldn’t regain momentum.”

Soroco will play at 4:30 p.m. Friday against Hayden in Round 2 of the Meeker Shootout.
