— The Soroco High School boys basketball team lost its first two games of the season, playing Saturday at the Burro Classic tournament in South Park.

The Rams fell to Platte Canyon, 42-27, and to South Park, 69-43, in what Soroco coach Shawn Hayes said were turnover-ridden games for the Rams.

The Rams pushed the pace and absorbed the bruises that come with that decision. It may not have paid off Saturday, but Hayes said those experiences will soon bear fruit for his young team.

“We’re trying to get used to playing at a faster pace,” Hayes said. “That created a lot of turnovers and points for the other team, but in the long run, it will make us a better team.”

Soroco was led in the Platte Canyon game by Brandon Veilleux, who scored six points. Bosch Erickson added five.

Colton Stroup then scored 14 to lead the way against South Park. Veilleux had 11.

“It was a good weekend for us,” Hayes said. “It was a little rough score-wise, but we came away with a lot of stuff we can work on and a lot of positives, too.”
