— Youth and inexperience showed for the Soroco High School boys basketball in three games in Meeker, according to coach Shawn Hayes.

The team lost three times at the Cowboy Shootout tournament. It lost 74-37 Thursday against Aspen, 61-52 Friday against Moffat County’s junior varsity team and 79-33 Saturday against Cedaredge.

“We struggled a bit. We’re still trying to find that cohesion, trying to bring together our inexperienced kids, our youth,” Hayes said. “We had a ton of turnovers, but we still had a lot of positives going forward. We made a lot of strides as far as working together.”

Brandon Veilleux led the team in scoring, pouring in 16 Thursday, 17 Friday and eight Saturday.

Hayes said the team, 0-5, enjoyed portions of each game in which it proved competitive. That came later in the game against Aspen. It came earlier and more consistently Friday against Moffat County.

“We’re very proud of the team,” he said. “In each game, there was a point where we were starting to make a run and thought, ‘Hey, we’re in this.’ We’re capable of competing and playing with any team we’ve played so far, but we have to limit our mistakes.”

Soroco plays at 7 p.m. at home Friday against South Park.
