Soccer team snatches title

Eric Rineer

The Sailors boys soccer team rolled to a shutout victory over the Battle Mountain Huskies in Avon on Thursday, capturing yet another Western Slope League title. This year, the Sailors won the crown on the home team’s field by a score of 3-0. Thursday’s win made many of the Sailors seniors four-time league champions.

Dropping the Huskies took a little pressure off the local team, which would have had to win the title the hard way if it had fallen The Sailors would have had to otherwise knock off the Palisade Bulldogs in their final-regular season game to lay claim to the title.

Sailors’ high-scorer Mike Rinn got it going early for his team. Rinn got one into the net at the 12-minute mark, putting Steamboat up for good.

On a breakaway, Roddy Beall added the ensuing score at the 62-minute mark. Kyle Nelson tacked on the final goal in the closing minutes on a penalty kick. Chris Gibson recorded the shutout. Steamboat’s game with Palisade takes place in Palisade at 11 a.m. Saturday while the junior varsity match between the two schools follows at 1 p.m.
