Soaring above Steamboat Springs in a motorless plane

Steamboat Today reader Trevyn Newpher shared this video of himself on a tandem glider flight soaring over Steamboat Springs with the Steamboat Springs Soaring Association Aug. 19.

Newpher said the motorless aircraft, also called a sailplane, utilizes updrafts or thermals in the same way an eagle or a hawk would.

“We used a winch to tow us up to around 1,200 feet off the ground then found thermals to gain lift from there,” Newpher said.
