Search and Rescue crews locate men near Dumont Lake lot

— Two snowmobilers were found in good condition Monday afternoon after becoming separated in bad weather on Rabbit Ears Pass.

Routt County Search and Rescue incident commander Darrel Levingston said the men – Ricky McAndrew of Craig and Jason Ray of Hayden – had been snowmobiling from the Dumont Lake parking area toward Rabbit Ears when an intense snowstorm forced the men to turn around and head back to the parking area.

The men became separated after McAndrew lost sight of Ray’s snowmobile tracks. McAndrew called a family member for help, Levingston said.

Search and Rescue crews began an immediate search for the men because of the poor weather conditions.

“It was pretty nasty up there,” Levingston said. “We knew they had the ability to make a fire and normally would have given them a little longer to try to get out of the field, but since the weather was so bad, we headed up immediately.”

Ray was found walking along a trail toward the parking area. McAndrew was found shortly after near a grove of trees Search and Rescue members had advised McAndrew to use for shelter.
