A pack of six Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club racers will be China bound soon, off to compete in the Junior Snowboarding World Championships in Yabuli, China, early next month.

The contingent is comprised wholly of Alpine snowboard racers, coached by Thedo Remmelink and Dave Winters, and they’re headed for a resort in northeastern China, about 200 miles north of North Korea.

“It’s a big thing for them,” Remmelink said. “They’re training really hard. We’ve been here in Steamboat working and we’re just been focused on technique and building speed, so it’s been fun.”

The group will consist of four United States athletes — Maggie Carrigan, Nina Argento, Myles Silverman and Billy Winters. The team also will include Christian De Oliveria, an Australian racer, and Riley Kilmer-Choi, of Canada.

“It’s awesome,” Winter Sports Club snowboard director Tori Koski said. “It just proves how our snowboard Alpine program with Thedo coaching produces these athletes.”

The event kicks off March 6 and runs through March 12.
