The free summer concert schedule for Snow Bowl released at the beginning of this week features a jam-packed lineup of 22 total shows.

The season opener, set for 2-8 p.m. Sunday, will feature four bands and six hours of music with the theme “Waking the Giant.”

Sunday’s headliners, Pixie and The Partygrass Boys, are returning to Snow Bowl with their bluegrass music. The opening act, local band Apple Pie and a Guy, will bring more bluegrass to the show, followed by alt-rock band May Be Fern and Colorado fiddle-rock band Dealer Takes Four.

The season will end with another four-band event, “Putting the Giant to Sleep.” This closing concert is new to Summer Music Fest this year, with the two bookend events inspired by the bowling alley’s view of Sleeping Giant Mountain. Snow Bowl Creative Director Rory Clow called it an “iconic and notable mountain in Steamboat” to focus the fest around.

For its fifth annual season, the schedule will remain similar to past summers, with weekly shows primarily on Wednesdays and five Sunday shows. The concerts coincide with Snow Bowl’s happy hour — doors open at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Parking will be limited with overflow available in Riverside Plaza after 6 p.m. Guests are encouraged to utilize the free bus or their bikes for transportation. Events are open to kids and dogs.

Although their first season of music in 2020 included a mixture of paid-admission and free concerts, Snow Bowl’s increase in donors has enabled the event to remain free all summer, a testament to the event’s growth over its five years.

Family Bowl, a nonprofit branch of the Western Center Family, facilitates sponsorships and partnerships that help fund the events. Sponsors include Crazy 88 Ranch, Steamboat Radio, Billo, Schmiggity’s, Long Drink, Gran Coramino, Jose Cuervo Tequila, Tincup Whiskey, Partake Brewing, 1Off Performance and The Green Company.

Snow Bowl also worked closely with Schmiggity’s to curate this year’s musically diverse lineup. It includes funk brass band LowDown, Cousin Curtiss’ soulful rock and reggae, electro rock, country rock and heavy metal groups.

Hosting live music since 2014, Schmiggity’s has partnered with Snow Bowl since the first Summer Music Fest, providing expertise and band knowledge to secure bookings. The broad array of bands makes Snow Bowl’s events “unique because it’s not just one genre,” said Rory.

The series finale, “Putting the Giant to Sleep,” will be 2-8 p.m. Sept. 28 and feature another six hours of music. Headliner Taylor Scott Band and openers Wordan Jilson & The Wild Bunch, Eric Delaney’s Taste Test and Speak of the Devil will close out the summer season.
