It’s a tricky game, preparing for the season for a cross-country skier. Consider, for instance, the results from last weekend’s West Yellowstone Super Tour races in Montana, the annual kickoff to the competitive season for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Nordic skiers.
“We don’t have to be sharp, sharp,” Winter Sports Club coach Brian Tate said of the event. “If any kid was super sharp, I’d be surprised, even worried.”
That’s because the race follows a week of hard training. “Super sharp” is for the months ahead, not for Thanksgiving weekend. That weekend is for building, and that, Tate said, is what took place on the Montana snow.
The big races are in the future, but Friday and Saturday results show promise for those Winter Sports Club skiers who entered, he said.
Cara Piske notched some of the day’s best results, finishing third in the U20 group and 31st overall in a 1.3-kilometer sprint qualifier race. She was also second in the junior A final in the sprint heat results, third in the U20 and 29th overall in the 10K freestyle Nordic skiing distance
“She was pretty fired up,” Tate said.
Other top finishers with Steamboat ties were Evan Weinman, third in the U18 division and 45th overall in the 1.3K sprint distance; and Max Scrimgeour, now skiing for University of Colorado, fourth in U20 and 49th overall.
Mary Rose was fifth in the U23 and 17th overall at the 1.3K distance, skiing for the Sun Valley Gold Team, and Lucy Newman, also with CU, was second in the U20 and 23rd overall.
Lars Hannah was third among U18 skiers and 54th overall in the 15K men’s freestyle race. Noel Keeffe, meanwhile, was 10th in the U16 5K freestyle juniors race, and Anna Burkholder was eighth in the U16 5K freestyle women’s race.

Steamboat campground expands as summer season begins; area campgrounds nearly reaching full capacity
