Skiers bring hardware from Idaho Olympics

Kylie Douglas’ second-place finish in the moguls at last week’s 2004 Junior Olympic Freestyle Championships in Idaho highlighted a strong showing for the members of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.
Champions were crowned in big air, halfpipe, aerials and mogul events during the event, which took place March 17 through 21 at the Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho.
Douglas’ silver-medal performance came Friday, two days into the Junior Olympic Championships.
McKenzy Golding of the Far West won the event with a score of 22.25. Douglas was second at 20.51, and Squaw Valley’s Alexandra Teng was third with a score of 19.80. Steamboat’s Caterina Mader was fourth, Maryann Skraba was 16th, and Jenny Lee was 17th. Patty Hanley came in 25th, and Camille Bucci came in 26th.
Heavenly’s Sho Kashima won the men’s event. The top Steamboat skier was Bo Randolph in 20th. Sam Tarrant was 24th, and Nick Demetrian was 42nd.
The championships opened March 17 with the halfpipe event. Jennifer Hudak of the Eastern Division won the women’s side, and Minnesota’s Everly Gohman topped the men’s results. Top Steamboat finishers in the event included Lee in 14th, Bucci in 15th (first among J4 skiers) and Mader in 19th.

On March 18, the skiers headed to the big-air hill for the second event of the week. California skier K.C. Oakley won the women’s event and A.J. Burton of Wasatch topped the men’s event.
Skraba was the top Steamboat woman in ninth place (second in the J1 age group) and Jake Cohn was third (first in the J2 age group) in the men’s group.
Eastern Division skier Christina Craddock was the top woman, and independent Bryan McCormack topped the men’s results in Saturday’s aerial events.
Mader was the top Steamboat women in seventh place, Bucci was 11th, and Lee was 15th. Lee was the top J2 skier in the competition. The Steamboat men’s finishes were led by Randolph in 18th, Nathaniel Chellel in 27th and Scott Roche in 39th.
The championships came to a close Sunday with the dual mogul event. The Winter Sports Club’s top finish came from Skraba in fourth.
