Soda Creek music teacher wins award

A Soda Creek Elementary School teacher has been named the recipient of an annual statewide award from the American Legion.

Music teacher Amy Larson will be awarded the “Outstanding Teacher Americanism Award” at the Legion’s Mid-Year Conference Banquet in Colorado Springs on Jan. 28.

Local American Legion commander Jim Stanko nominated Larson after her fifth-grade music class performed at a Soda Creek assembly in November. The assembly honored local military veterans and the Veterans Day holiday.

During the performance, about 60 of Larson’s students sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America My Home,” performed a song called “Remember You” in sign language and shared posters and banners commemorating family members who have served in the military.

Stanko said the display of spirit moved him.

“It was more than just the music,” he said this week. “It was quite a good lesson in patriotism for the kids, and that’s what we’re all about.”

Larson said the award is “a great honor,” and she credited her students.

“It’s really a joint effort,” she said. “The kids gave a lot of ideas for the program, and we put it together as a team.”

Larson said her husband, Mike, knew she had a chance at the award long before she did.

“He knew I was getting nominated but kept it a secret,” Amy Larson said. “I was very surprised.”

“We’re very excited for her, for the kids and for the veterans,” Soda Creek Principal Judy Harris said. “It was a very heartfelt performance.”
