Shimko first, second in Steamboat freestyle events

— Avital Shimko led the way for Steamboat Springs skiers during the final two days of the Ski Town USA Freestyle event Sunday and Monday at Steamboat Ski Area.

Shimko, a veteran with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, was second in Saturday’s individual moguls event, then even better a day later, winning a dual moguls competition.

Shimko was at the forefront of a strong day of skiing by Winter Sports Club athletes.

Sunday, teammate Jaelin Kauf finished right on her heels in third. Vail’s Tess Johnson won the day’s competition.

Maggie Ryan was 10th for the women, Claudia Gueli 16th, Lindsay Mustard 24th, Eleanor Mullins 31st and Amber Turner 35th.

On the men’s side, Ryan Dyer finished third on Sunday. Zach Rosa was 15th, Max Bernard 21st, Tyler Strnad 24th, Ben Hoefer 27th, Jack Craig 28th, Landon Wendler 29th, Daniel Walker 35th, Linden Groeneweg 37th and Bridger Boyd 44th.

Edged out by Johnson on Sunday, Shimko struck back Monday, beating Johnson in the dual moguls final, her fifth head-to-head win of the day. Kauf finished fourth and Ryan sixth.
