Sheriff, GRAMNET probe Carver’s death

The Routt County Sheriff’s Office and GRAMNET are investigating where a suicide victim bought the amphetamines that were in his blood when he died Feb. 7.

An autopsy on Daniel Carver, 19, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, found traces of marijuana, amphetamines and alcohol in his blood. Carver’s family has said he was addicted to methamphetamine.

“We are certainly looking at where he got the methamphetamine. If it was a local source, we want to nip that off right away,” Routt County Sheriff John Warner said.

GRAMNET, the Grand, Routt and Moffat Narcotics Enforcement Team has investigated more than 40 meth labs in Northwest Colorado since 1996. Only one meth lab has been discovered in Steamboat Springs.

“When a source is determined, we will take necessary and appropriate actions to deal with it,” Warner said.

The suicide itself is not being investigated, Warner said.

Since the teen’s death, his grandfather Eugene Germain has talked about the dangers of methamphetamine as a highly addictive drug and urged others to become educated about it and reach out to those who use it.

Germain said he believed his grandson was purchasing locally some of the meth he used.
