Sgt. Johann Svensson

Army Sgt. Johann Svensson, a 2000 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, is scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in March with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Svensson joined the Army after high school and completed basic training at Fort Knox, Ken. He underwent technical training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y.

His unit was deployed to Kosovo, Yugoslavia, for seven months and returned to Fort Drum.

While at Fort Drum, he met and married Sara Barsley of Demorestville, Ontario, Canada.

Svensson subsequently was transferred to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, stationed in Vincenza, Italy. He went to Kirkuk, Iraq, with the 173rd on the second day of the Iraq War and served there for 14 months. The brigade returned to Italy, where the Svenssons now live. He was promoted to sergeant in January.
