STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Crews worked Tuesday morning to tow a semitrailer from the side of U.S. Highway 40 near the Routt County Rifle Club west of Steamboat Springs. The truck slid off the road Monday evening after driving too fast for conditions on icy roads, according to Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott.

The truck was heading east when it crossed oncoming lanes of traffic and crashed into the hillside, spilling its load of butter. The cleanup from the crash extended into Tuesday afternoon, with intermittent lane closures while at least three dumpsters were filled with butter and other debris, Elliott said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and there were no injuries. The driver of the semitrailer was ticketed for careless driving, Elliott said.

In addition to State Patrol calls, local law enforcement officials responded to at least 11 crashes Monday across Routt County, where snow and wind caused hazardous driving conditions.
