Search for building official continues

All applications for the position of chief building official for the Regional Building Department have been received, and the position should be filled in the coming weeks.

The hiring committee will sort through the 13 applications and set up interviews, Routt County Commissioner Doug Monger said.

Applications came from local residents as well as people living on the Front Range, Routt County Manager Tom Sullivan said.

Interviews should be finished by the second week in February, Sullivan said, with hopes of filling the position as soon as the person selected could begin working.

Some applicants apparently applied for what they thought was an opening for a chief maintenance person, Monger said. Those applicants will be eliminated.

The hiring committee includes Monger, Tom Sullivan, Steamboat Springs City Manager Paul Hughes, City Councilwoman Susan Dellinger, two representatives from the Yampa Valley Construction Trades Association and one community representative.

The chief building officials position opened after Mark Marchus, who had worked in the position for six years, was terminated almost a year ago.

Marchus was terminated amid allegations that he did not create a good working environment at the department and violated county gift polices by taking stones from a contractor. He has denied the allegations.

Carl Dunham, the interim chief building official, will stay in that position until it is permanently filled.
