Firms outline recruiting strategies for hiring new city manager
Steamboat Springs — Armed with private investigators, decades of experience and even a proprietary online search tool that one of the firms claims is better than Google at sniffing out potential skeletons in closets, three executive search firms are vying to help the Steamboat Springs City Council find its next city manager.
The council on Tuesday night will decide whether to choose one of the firms and kick off the city manager recruiting process, or defer and leave the entire process to the new city council that will be seated next month.
Council President Bart Kounovsky said he will look to the three members of the council who are staying on past November to see if they would like to start the recruiting process or wait until the four new council members are seated.
Slavin Management Consultants, Strategic Government Resources and Waters and Company have submitted proposals to conduct the search. Their costs range from $23,459 to $27,000.
The proposals reveal some of the strategies the firms would use to select and vet candidates for the council.
Waters and Company, a firm based in Dallas, Texas, says it will use a web-based survey of city employees, community leaders and citizens to help the council develop a profile for the ideal city manager candidate.
Strategic Government Resources, a search firm based in Keller, Texas, touts its proprietary search process that they use to generate a “media report” on the candidates that chronicles previous press coverage.
According to SGR, these reports typically range from 20 to 300 pages per candidate and can even include blog posts.
And Slavin Management Consultants, a firm based in Norcross, Georgia, promotes its track record of having more than 95 percent of its executive placements remain on the job for at least five years.
Hiring a new permanent city manager will be one of the first big tasks of the new city council.
The current council postponed a work session focusing on the relationship between the council and the city manager until the new council is sworn in.
Steamboat’s last three city managers have left amid rocky relationships with the council.
The average tenure of a city manager in Steamboat currently stands at two years and 10 months.
