School board meeting cancelled

A meeting that the Steamboat Springs Board of Education had planned for Monday night has been cancelled.

The board scheduled the meeting Monday, when a meeting that night was abruptly cut short because of a discussion about board member conflicts of interest.

Some board members and a community member who commented that night were concerned that new member Michelle Dover’s history as a district substitute teacher was a conflict of interest that violated board policy and may have meant earlier decisions made by the board were invalid.

Dover resigned as a substitute immediately following her first meeting Nov. 16.

Upon further discussion with legal counsel following last week’s meeting, it was decided that decisions made during the first meeting of the new board Nov. 16 were valid, according to Superintendent Brad Meeks, eliminating the need for today’s meeting.
