Saturday run to benefit Emerald Mountain School

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Runners will stretch out for the penultimate Steamboat Springs Running Series event of the season Saturday, tackling the Emerald Mountain Trail Run.

The race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday outside Olympian Hall at the base of Howelsen Hill.

There will be four options for athletes. An untimed 12-kilometer hike will begin at 8 a.m. Timed 12K and 5K runs will start at 9 a.m., and a 1-mile kids fun run will start at 9:10 a.m.

Money from the race will benefit The Emerald Mountain School and its scholarship programs.

Online registration closed Thursday evening, but registration will be available from 4 p.m. to 6 Friday at Twisted Trails Running Company in downtown Steamboat Springs — also the site of packet pickup — and at the starting line from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. at the starting line Saturday morning.

The race for the top spots in the season-long Running Series points contest is largely decided, though enough points do remain for some shuffling in the standings.

Allen Belshaw has been a consistent force on the men’s side. He’s won his 50-59 age group in all 11 races he’s entered this year. He’s then also placed in the overall top 10 in eight of those to pad his point lead. He has 149. Daniel Goding is second with 113 and Gave Small third at 77.

Penelope Freedman is similarly sitting comfortably in front on the women’s side. She’s compiled 117 points by winning five of the six events she’s entered. Sandy Buckner is second with 79 points.
