Salyer does the trick for Steamboat soccer at Rifle

— A Jack Salyer hat trick pushed Steamboat Springs High School soccer to a 5-0 shutout win at league opponent Rifle on Saturday.

The Sailors’ first goal came with about two minutes remaining in the first half when Salyer punched it in. It was a momentum-shifting moment, head coach Rob Bohlmann said.

“I think Rifle had worked extremely hard, and for us to put that in, emotionally, it gave us confidence going into halftime,” Bohlmann said.

Salyer’s second goal came off a Hector Lopez assist to open the second half, and he opened up a 3-0 lead with his hat trick moments later.

Junior Nathan DePuy and senior Carter Kounovsky each found the back of the net, as well.

The highlight of the game, Bohlmann said, was when freshman keeper Andrew McCawley was inserted into the game and made a diving save in the final 15 minutes.

After an emotional week highlighted by two double-overtime games, Bohlmann was pleased to see his team fight for a shutout.

“This was a hard-fought game, and getting the shutout after four games in eight days, this was a huge week for us,” Bohlmann said. “We feel really good about that. We start off next week with three days of quality training then head to Summit.”

Steamboat’s game at Summit is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.
