Sales tax collections up almost 7% in April

The city’s final April sales, use, accommodations and short-term rentals tax report shows collections were 6.84% higher than in April 2024, an increase of $144,311.

Year-to-date sales tax collections are 1.37% more than year-to-date collections through the same period in 2024.

When comparing this April to April 2024, the notable increases in collections by category are in construction at 24.16%, grocery stores at 10.75% and miscellaneous retail at 8.75% over last April.



Changes were seen most notably in West Steamboat and out-of-town locations.

Accommodations tax revenue is dedicated to maintenance of improvements and amenities that enhance the community identity, environmental sustainability and economic health of Steamboat Springs. This includes the acquisition of real property for parks, recreation and open space purposes, in addition to preserving the city’s natural resources.



April accommodations-tax collections were 5.64% lower compared to April 2024, a decrease of $3,088.

The short-term rentals or STR tax is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch. It also provides funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing. This includes energy, stormwater, water, wastewater and multi-modal transportation.

April STR tax collection was 7.23% lower compared to April 2024, a decrease of $26,468.

Building use tax is utilized to fund city capital projects. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax reconciliations completed and the size and number of developments in the city. April’s net use-tax collections totaled $285,088.
