Sailors win by forfeit

The Steamboat Springs girls soccer team picked up a win Thursday when Glenwood Springs forfeited.

The Sailors improve to 10-1-1 overall and 10-0 in Western Slope League play with the forfeit, the first coach Rob Bohlmann has seen happen since he’s been a coach.

Steamboat is scheduled to host Evergreen in a nonleague game at 4 p.m. today at Dudley Field. The JV game will follow at 6 p.m.

Because of illness and personnel issues, Glenwood Springs would have had difficulty fielding a full team Thursday.

“I feel bad for Steamboat because they were counting on that game,” Glenwood Athletics Director Steve Cable said. “We only had 11 players, so were down to 10 when one called in sick (Thursday), and nine of them are freshmen.”

Cable added that many of the Demons are close to playing the maximum number of halves allowed under Colorado High School Activities Association rules because they have played both JV and varsity this season.

Glenwood has hopes of making the playoffs if it defeats Battle Mountain on Saturday.

“It’s not the way we like to go, and you like to play,” Bohlmann said.

But, he added, it would be more beneficial for Steamboat to get in a quality training session than to play an uncompetitive game because of Glenwood’s numbers.
