Sailors third at Front Range tourney

— The Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team finished third Saturday in a tournament hosted by Vista Peak Preparatory in Aurora.

That’s not bad, coach John Aragon said, but added the performance was shy of the potential he sees in his team.

The squad was a point out of second place and four behind first.

“I think we were the best team there,” he said. “We didn’t quite play up to our ability. We’re a young team, though, so hopefully, from this experience, we can keep going and see where we’re at when we hit regionals and state.”

Steamboat did have some standout performances, none better than Maddie Thompson’s finals match at No. 2 singles. She advanced there with two easy wins, 6-0, 6-1, then 6-1, 6-1. In the finals, she got down big, 5-1, in the first set. She didn’t stop, however, and roared back to win that set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(1), then the next, 6-0.

“Maddie just went to work by fighting for each point, and she broke that girl’s spirit,” Aragon said.
Mae Thorp placed second at No. 1 singles, as did Lily Fox at No. 3 singles and the No. 4 doubles team of Morgan Sauerbrey and Lauren Ehrlich.

Emmie Thompson and Natalie Simon were third at No. 1 doubles, while Hadley McGee and Mariah Walker were third at No. 4 doubles

Next up for the team is a trip Friday to play at Poudre High School.
