Sailors tennis picks up win in season-opening match at home

— After losing seven players, including four seniors, from last year’s team, Sailors coach John Aragon wasn’t sure what to expect from the Steamboat Springs High School girls tennis team’s opening match Friday afternoon at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs

But after the match against Boulder, the coach could not have been happier.

“This was a great first match for our kids,” Aragon said of the 5-2 victory over Boulder. “Our singles players were outstanding, and we got a lot more than I expected from our young doubles players.”

Steamboat’s No. 1 singles player Ellie Bender won a marathon match 6-7 (4), 6-0 and 10-3 against Boulder’s Annie Chen.

“Ellie showed a lot of heart on the court today,” Aragon said. “She set a great example for the rest of our players.”

The 2 1/2-hour match went to a tiebreaker before Steamboat’s top player put things away.

Steamboat’s No. 2 singles player Kira Lorenzen followed suit, topping Boulder’s Audrey Obright 6-3, 6-2, and Steamboat’s No. 3 player Maddie Labor topped Boulder’s Jamie Young 6-3, 6-1.

Victories by Steamboat’s Hannah Haggarty and Emmie Thompson at No. 1 doubles and Sabrina Berend and Maddie Thompson at No. 2 singles sealed the win for the hometown team.

Steamboat will only have a few hours to savor the win over Boulder. The team will be back on the court at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs against Evergreen.
